Q- What is the main purpose of EverydayHealthGirl.com?

A- I decided to start a health focused website to help others learn about how nutrition affects our health. There is an incredible amount of information available, and in my research I found that there are also a lot of conflicting opinions on the topics of nutrition and health. This website is my place to share my ideas and opinions about health and nutrition– I have spent countless hours researching and reading about the topic, and I am passionate to share this information with as many people as I can.

I suggest that you take some time read my article titled “Straight Talk About Healthy Eating” to learn more about how we can take incremental steps towards health and wellness.

Q- What is a “Whole Foods” eating plan?

A- When someone is referring to a whole foods eating plan, it means that they eat foods that are unrefined and unprocessed. Focusing on foods that have a little processing as possible means that your body will be able to get the nutrients that it needs to be healthy. A whole foods eating plan focuses on the nutrients that are in live, plant based foods. I try to avoid processed foods and anything that contains man-made ingredients or chemicals.

Q- Isn’t is hard to follow a Whole Foods eating plan?

A- The transition from the Standard American Diet is difficult in the beginning, because most people have addictions to processed foods that contain sugar, salt and other addictive ingredients. This website is designed to help you ease into a whole foods lifestyle, you will learn tips and tricks that will help you to transition and create habits that will be easy to follow.

Q- Is EverydayHealthGirl.com a weight loss program?

A- No! I do not teach any type of crash diets or unhealthy food regiments to lose weight. Instead, I teach that we should focus on the nutritional value of food, and a pleasant side effect is that many people lose weight in the process! Following a good nutrition plan will help your body to get the nutrients that it needs, and in turn your body will balance out to a healthy weight for your frame.

When I started learning about nutrition and health I began to make changes in the way I was cooking and the types of food that I would purchase at the store. I set out to improve the health of our family (without thinking about weight loss), and as a result of these changes my husband lost 30 pounds! He wasn’t exercising at the time (due to a strained back), but he was still able to lose the weight simply from the foods that he was eating. We didn’t limit our intake or count calories, we simply focused our eating on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, etc.

Q- Becki, are you a vegetarian?

A- Many people ask me if I am a vegetarian, because it is common for me to not eat meat. I don’t like to label myself though– I don’t like to identify people (myself or others) with a label that defines them by what they are “not.” For example, the vegetarian label focuses on the fact that a person does not eat meat. Instead, I choose to focus on the fact that I eat mostly whole foods: fresh fruits and vegetables, whole grains, nuts, etc.

I believe that there is a balance in all things. For example, most people would consider me to be a vegetarian, but I’m not a strict vegetarian according to the definition of the word… for the most part I don’t cook much meat at home, but I will eat it when we are eating out or visiting other people. I strive to keep my animal protein intake at minimal levels, under 5% of my caloric intake. Sometimes a week will go by that I don’t eat any meat, other times I will eat it once in a week or every other week, and it is usually chicken or fish. I avoid processed meats (like hot dogs, sandwich meat, etc) like the plague.

There was a time when I actually went completely vegan for a little while (no animal products whatsoever), but I have found that I personally don’t like completely cutting out eggs and cheese. I eat them sparingly, and usually try to buy hormone/antibiotic free dairy now when it’s possible. It’s a bit more expensive, but I don’t mind spending the extra money since I don’t buy a lot.

The reason I decided to not go strictly vegetarian is because studies have shown that there is not much difference to keeping animal protein intake between 0% to 5%, but once you pass the 5% mark chances of health problems may start increasing. Keep in mind that it is 5% of your caloric intake, and meat and dairy are both pretty high in calories (so you should eat small portions). If you want more detailed information, read “The China Study”– that’s the most in-depth study about animal protein that I have been able to find.

Q- Do you ever eat foods that come in a box or a can?

A- Yes, I do use some foods that are prepackaged, but I am selective about the products that I am willing to buy. As a general rule of thumb, I always read the ingredients list and if it contains ingredients that I would normally cook with then I am comfortable purchasing that product.

For example, I buy 100% whole wheat pasta (which comes in a box) but I always read that label to make sure that there aren’t any other unwanted ingredients. You would be surprised to see how many “whole wheat” pastas there are that contain a little bit of whole wheat… and a lot of other highly processed ingredients and chemicals. So, I prefer to only buy the whole wheat pasta that only has “whole wheat” listed on the ingredients list.

Q- As a reader of this website, should you consider a plant-based, whole foods lifestyle?

A- I encourage everyone to spend some time reading and studying the topics of nutrition and health, and then start experimenting in your own life to determine what works best for you. Pay attention to how you feel when you eat different types of food, and be open to trying new recipes. You will find that eating a plant based, whole-foods diet will help you to have more energy, lose weight, and your health will improve.

Q- Don’t you get sick of eating a plant-based diet?

A- Most people assume that all fruits, vegetables, and whole grains have a bland taste, which is why so many people don’t eat very many fruits and veggies on a daily basis. They are right to a point, because obviously a bite of greasy, salted potato chips will have more flavor than a bite of cucumber. The chips are filled with oils and chemicals that are designed to make you addicted and crave the junk food even more!

But, when you start to cut out sugar, salts, chemicals, and additives you will find that the natural taste in food is AMAZING! There are many, many healthy options available to eat, and lots of natural and healthy ingredients that can be used to flavor your dishes. It will take some time for your pallet to cleanse, but once you make the transition your eyes will be opened to a whole new world of tastes.

Don’t get me wrong, I still think that ice cream, french fries and candy taste good… but I rarely eat them because I feel so much better when I avoid the processed, junk foods. I have personally broken the addiction and it is very liberating to not be tied to those cravings! I will occasionally allow myself a bite/taste of processed foods (usually in a social setting), but I usually avoid them and instead I choose to make healthy alternatives that still taste amazing! I eat homemade ice cream, cookies, etc– but these homemade items are used from healthy, natural ingredients in my kitchen (no sugar, bleached/refined flour, etc). You can still have yummy treats because the recipes have been designed around nutrient dense foods that provide my body with health!
