Why A High-Fiber Diet Helps To Lower Cholesterol

High cholesterol is a common problem in our nation, it seems that more and more people are being diagnosed with high cholesterol, and the solution that most people turn to is medication. But, did you know that following a healthier eating plan can actually lower cholesterol?

I know it sounds a little too good to be true, before I learned about healthy eating I assumed that the “fix” to most illnesses and diseases was to simply go to the doctor and get the medication that would make it better.

But, I have since learned that food can be a very powerful healing force, following a whole foods eating plan can give your body the building blocks it needs to help your body heal and be well. Whole foods contain nutrients, enzymes, vitamins and minerals that are necessary to sustain life. They can actually heal, repair, and prevent disease!

The Standard American Diet will not heal the body, it only causes people to become more sick. Junk food contains minimal amounts of nutrition, and they are full of toxic chemicals and processed ingredients that cause harm to the body. These types of food are common in our society, and they are consumed in mass quantities by people who do not realize how harmful they can be to the body.

When people eat these harmful foods, their bodies will begin to break down and struggle to be healthy amid the junk food that is being consumed. Diseases such as high cholesterol, heart disease, cancer, and obesity are becoming more and more common because of these poor eating habits.

So many Americans are turning to medication to try to relieve the symptoms… the medications may help a little bit, but it is not a very effective treatment when people continue to eat the same food which is causing them so much harm!

I recently read an article that suggested that fast food establishments should serve statins along with the meals. In other words, it is ok to eat fast food as long as you take medication to counteract the effects! It’s like telling someone that it’s ok for them to smoke cigarettes as long as they have an oxygen tank available to help them breathe! Why not avoid the harmful situation in the first place?

It is true that medication may help with lowering cholesterol, but it is not as effective as treating the root of the problem: eating habits. Following a high fiber eating plan is one of the most effective ways to lower the amount of bad cholesterol in your body.

The best source of fiber is from whole, natural foods such as fruits and vegetables, whole grains, beans and legumes, nuts and seeds.

Sometimes people wonder why fiber is so effective at helping to lower the levels of bad cholesterol in your body. The reason for this is that the fiber helps to physically pull the cholesterol out of your intestines. The cholesterol attaches itself to the fiber that is working its way through your intestines. This allows it to be eliminated from your body easily.

In addition to physically removing the cholesterol from your intestines, fiber also has another helpful way of getting your body to eliminate cholesterol. When the fiber removes cholesterol from your body it also takes out bile salts. These bile salts are normally produced by your liver, and they are an important part of your body chemistry. This means that a high fiber diet actually stimulates your liver so that it will absorb cholesterol from your bloodstream. So fiber essentially packs a double whammy when it comes to lowering cholesterol levels. It physically removes cholesterol from your intestines and it also stimulates your liver to absorb cholesterol out of your bloodstream.

Eating a diet high in fiber can help your body to naturally rid itself of the bad cholesterol, and it can even reduce the need for medications!

There is no soluble fiber in junk food, highly processed foods, meat, or dairy products. So, if you want to lower your bad cholesterol levels you should focus your eating on natural, plant based foods and limit the foods listed above. Any step in the right direction can help, so make a commitment to start eating more high fiber foods and reducing the unhealthy foods.
