3 Simple Steps to Healthier Eating

Health is important because it affects EVERYTHING that you do. If you aren’t feeling well, it will hinder every other area in your life! The problem is that many people don’t understand the impact that food and nutrition have on their health, so even though they may not feel well they will continue eating unhealthy foods because they don’t understand the cause-and-affect that junk food has on the body. These people know that they are always tired and have no energy, but they may not know how to make the transition to healthy eating. In this article you will be learning about 3 tips to start creating healthy habits in your life.

Remember: It takes some time to learn new habits… some people say that it takes 21 days to form a new habit! But luckily you don’t have to change your eating plan all at once, start implementing 1 or 2 steps at a time and you will find yourself easily transitioning to a healthier eating plan.

1. The first tip that you can consider is to start eating more fruits and vegetables. The advantage to eating fresh produce is that you can find many different tastes and textures that will give you a variety of healthy foods to eat. Additionally, these foods are dense in nutrients and enzymes– fruits and vegetables provide a high amount of nutrition per calorie, and your body can use that nutrition to be well. Fill up on lots of fresh produce and you will find yourself eating less junk food throughout the day because you are already full of high-nutrient food. Your cravings will literally start to decrease because you are feeding your body what it needs to survive (instead of trying to live on empty calorie, nutrition-less foods).

2. Next, you need to be sure that you are eating the right portion sizes. Many people consume too many calories because they eat too much food that does not contain nutrients. Filling your stomach with foods that are highly processed does not provide your body with the nutrients that are necessary to survive– so you will continue to feel hunger pains because you are not properly fed. Eating junk foods like chips, cookies, and candy will not provide the nutrients necessary for your health! It is better to eat fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and small amounts of lean/organic dairy to satiate your appetite. Once you are full, you may eat a treat IF you really need it, but at that point you will be less likely to eat junk food because you will already feel satisfied. And you can always have a healthy, nutrient dense treat on hand to finish off the meal.

3. Our third tip is to avoid mindless eating. When you sit down in front of the tv to watch a show, don’t take the whole container of food with you. Instead, you should dish out a serving size in a bowl and eat from that portion. It is easy to get caught up in a movie or reading something online and not notice how much food you are consuming… and before you know it the entire box of crackers will be empty! Pay attention to the signals that your body is sending, and you will be able to know when you are full and satisfied without over-eating.

These three tips can help you to change you daily habits and move towards more of a healthy lifestyle. Remember that you will not be able to change everything at once, it is difficult to make a complete life change without taking small steps to work towards a healthier lifestyle. I suggest that you setup 1 healthy goal each week to work towards, and then over time you will find that your eating habits have changed for the better.
