Coconut Oil

Healthy fats are an important part of a balanced eating plan, and my favorite type of fat is coconut oil. Natural, extra virgin coconut oil contains medium-chain fatty acids– there aren’t very many foods that contain medium-chain fatty acids. Some of the benefits to consuming these fats are that your body uses them very efficiently, they medium-chain fatty acids are used as energy first instead of being stored as fat.

Some of the benefits of coconut oil include:

*It is anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and anti-viral
*Coconut oil helps to decrease the risk of strokes
*It helps to prevent heart disease that is related to blood and tissue infections
*Coconut oil assists in improving digestion and increases overall energy
*Blood sugar levels can be regulated by coconut oil, because it provides the cells energy without affecting insulin levels
*Coconut oil is great for the skin, it is soothing and anti-aging
*It is also great for your hair, it can be used to minimize friz, condition, and adds a healthy shine

Another great benefits of coconut oil is that is does not clog the arteries, because it is naturally a liquid form when it is heated about 76 degrees (and your body is warmer than that!)

There are many differing opinions about the health benefits of coconut oil, and most of the opposing point of view can be traced back to the mid 1980’s when a smear campaign was put together by other vegetable oil companies. They put many half-truths out there about coconut oil, resulting in a confusion about which kinds of oils were better for our health.

Our Western society has adopted the use of highly processed and refined oils in many of our foods, and the result has been a severe decline in our health. The risk of heart disease, obesity, and cholesterol rates are  increasing at an alarming rate. If you compare the facts with the Pacific Islands (who eat higher amounts of coconut based fats and use a minimal amount of other oils), you will see that their rates of heart disease and cholesterol are much lower– even though they are eating higher amounts of healthy fats!

If you want to learn more about the benefits of coconut oil, read The Coconut Oil Miracle by Bruce Fife, it’s an interesting book that expands more on the topic of how coconut oil relates to health.

When you purchase your coconut oil, it is very important to make sure that it is high-quality. You should be looking for a jar that specifically says “extra virgin” or “cold-pressed” which means that it was not treated with high levels of heat while to was processed. Taste and smell the oil, it should have a slight coconut flavor. If your oil is missing that hint of coconut taste, then you have purchased an inferior product which was most-likely over-processed and some of the health benefits may be missing.

The natural, extra virgin coconut oil is a great substitute for other types of vegetable based oils. Many of the store-bought oils have been heated to very high levels which can be very bad for your health! You need to get rid of the toxic oils that are sitting in your cupboards, they are dangerous to your health. Replace your vegetable oils with a good coconut oil. You can bake, cook, and saute with coconut oil… it can be used as a substitute in almost any recipe.

You can buy extra virgin, unrefined coconut oil at any health food store, or you can purchase it online for a cheaper price. My favorite website for extra virgin coconut oil is Mountain Rose Herbs, this is the best price I can find for high-quality coconut oil: Mountain Rose Herbs
